GLS University is proud to announce another benchmark institute for design education; we set to raise the bar of creative teaching in Gujarat. GLS Institute of Design is a prominent institute under GLS University, Ahmedabad offering design courses related to various creative fields. The Institute of Design provides four years Bachelors of Design Programme and five years Integrated Masters of Design Programme with specialisation in product, environment, communication & fashion design. The prime philosophy of GLS University is to provide an ideal and creative learning environment and to continue the tradition of excellence in the education of the sponsoring body of the University, viz., Gujarat Law Society (GLS).
4 Years Bachelors Programme
Bachelors Design Programme, offering all the subjects of design, emphasis on thinking and vocational nature of learning and ample industry exposure to become independent professional. All our students are instructed to real time scenarios, facing challenges, learning leadership and at the same time valuing teamwork.
The four years of the GLSID Programme will be divided into ‘I’, ‘YOU’, ‘THEY’ and ‘US’ years. ‘I- Year’ will focus on the skill sets of the students, to empower them to make their claims about sensitivity, perceptibility, connection and skillful execution. This can further enhance their chances of taking forward their disciplines, related to their area of specializations. The ‘YOU- Year’ will focus on students taking help from others to work out their projects. They will work in collaboration with other professionals like pattern makers, binders, printers, tailors to get specific design inputs etc. They will collaborate and thus get to understand the design process and through it also connect to the larger local and global context. ‘THEY Year’ will focus on encouraging the students to work closely with diverse groups like, the market, the users, the artisans and other marginalized groups in the developmental sector and understand their design need, their level of acceptance, their literacy level, their socio-economic condition, their environment and the kind of design solution that suits them. ‘US-Year’ will be the final year when the students will execute their own specialized project and work very closely with the user incorporating their feedback in the design solutions to make it more acceptable.
5 Years Integrated Masters Programme
GLS Institute of Design also offers a 5 years Integrated programme where students are awarded Masters Degree on successful completion of the programme. This is an ideal programme for the students having keen interest in design education and wanting to get a masters qualification with a clearly outlined specialization. The Programme completes in 5 years instead of 6 years in conventional mode, effectively saving 1 productive year for each participant. Integrated Masters Programme sets an accent for campus life, accentuates peer learning and elongates significant cultural dialogue.
Integrated Masters will have core components from the B Design course followed by the specialization in any particular design track. To keep the students’ involved and to extend the teaching and learning beyond the four walls of the classroom various clubs have been formed with the students as its core members under the guidance of the faculty team. Through these groups we seek to work towards the holistic growth of the student fraternity of GLSID and make them responsible stakeholders in the glory of the institute.
“It is essential for any Design Institute to create an environment for exploration and experimentation because these are the key to innovations.”
Design is about connecting and relating. At GLSID students will be trained to make the connection between their culture, the society around them and the larger world.
Culture is the practice of present, tradition is the practice of the past and technology is the practice for tomorrow. In other words, culture connects, tradition confirms and technology empowers. For any Design Institute it is important to inculcate, adopt, promote and practice all these elements to make their work more acceptable.
Taking a cultural root to design, GLSID envisions to adopt, experiment, explore, assimilate and innovate to create a unique environment of Design learning.
We have adopted innovative pedagogical tools which will connect with students in full efficiency during COVID-19. A lot of thinking and hard work have been put together to suit the requirement of respective courses whilst making sure that the students feel no disadvantage of not being on the campus. All our courses in these semesters were appreciated in student’s feedback.
Our four core disciplines are industry attested, well designed courses:

Final Affirmation
We are hearing you—closely, remotely. Completing your online teaching, examination and all other co- curricular & development activities on time with the passive support of staff & students. ‘Connect with Us’, ‘How To’ and ‘JOT Talk’ splendidly expresses our virtual presence during the pandemic. Our connection with students, experts and industry have contributed to the image of GLS Institute of Design on a positive note. All our efforts ensured that the learning is thoroughly insightful, holistic, and the employability of the student’s perspective remains at top priority.
Students, faculty and other invitees enjoyed the opportunity to learn about an umbrella of topics such as Sustainability and Crafts, Packaging, UI/UX and Lighting Design. The Future of industry linkages and its nodes closely knitted with the perspective of design ensembled learning curve of all attendees in all our virtual sessions. We ensured that the learning of the students remained contemporary and relevant to the field of the study and future work opportunities.
All our courses were conducted online, even the Graduation Project Jury was conducted online. Students always had their hands full with extra-curricular, co-curricular and student-development activities. This ensured that students have their share of fun. Mingling with friends virtually and winning prizes & laurels kept their morale high and ensured that they do not miss their campus life much.
Workshops play an important role in innovation and evolving teaching Pedagogies. Here teacher and student come together to form stronger associations. Various workshops and exhibitions organized at regular intervals in which students represent their design innovations and showcase area specific skills. The outcome of the workshops will be presented in exhibitions; and mentors, senior industry professionals, and students of other design institutes would be invited for the same. Through such exposure and interaction the Institute aims to polish designing and presentation skills of students which are essential for their professional career.
It's an affirmation towards quality education that all our students are well placed. From the array of choices to be placed in the industry our students enjoy the privilege to the fine cutting edge. Many graduates start their own independent design practice, while others prefer to work as part of a design team, often for high-profile labels. Our very first batch of students is reaching out to the industry and gladly they all have been placed well and our total placement is 100%. The clarity of thought must occur very early in a scholarly mind to pursue higher education. Those who wish to pursue higher education have to groom so that they are well received by globally recognised institutes like RCA, Kingston, Parsons, UAL, Nottingham, EKA, Humber, Estonia, to be named a few. Such pursuits are taken ahead of and formalised as a systemic approach. We have sessions beyond classrooms, exposure to global trends in universities, and what thought process to follow to stay consistent by the time our education completes. Highlights of Student’s Placement:
Placements are said to be the ultimate test for an academic institution. We understand this in true essence and therefore the students, even amidst the challenges of the current year, were prepared by the e-placement cell of respective institutions. Be it pre-placement talks, preparing for GD, writing resume, handling stress interviews, being a stand-out candidate or negotiating for the right profile and pay; the students were ready to take on.
Our linkage with students is on a personal note. We are aware of each of our student’s portfolio and proper approach and counselling is provided to each one of them. Leading corporates and dedicated design studios such as Desmania, Landscape India, Invent India, PADCARE Labs, Archana Shah and Associates, ABD Studio, Mad Umbrella, Three Dots, INDI Design, Bhusattva, Blue Buddha, Boat Audio, TCS etc. and offered jobs to the students who started ‘Work from Home’ even before their final results were announced.
