GLS University’s Faculty of Commerce under the auspice of ‘Academics and Beyond’, a lecture series where various expert speakers are invited to share their knowledge and inculcate values in the minds of this millennial generation, organised a guest session on ‘Careers in Modern Era’ led by Mr. Abhishek Singh Gautam.
He started the session by explaining the three important P’s in life to have a successful career, i.e. Passion, Purpose and Progress. One needs to take the bare minimum effort to the best of its potential. He also explained that people in leadership positions only care about one’s viewpoint if they are a value addition to the organisation.
He then pointed out the increase in unemployment in the age group of 18 to 30 years and it is not because there is no demand but because there is a huge void between what the industry requires from the candidates and the skills that the candidates have. He explained that this happens because the students don’t know how to apply what they have they learned to the real world, this can change when students take part in events, volunteer and start internships to get all the experiences possible.
He explained that to thrive in a management career one needs to have skills like, leadership skill, decision making, understanding people, understanding market and its trends, these are all the things that machines can’t do. The people going to top MBA colleges getting big packages is because they have the skillset which can never be replaced by machines. One needs two things to be able to succeed, first skills – both hard skills and soft skills, and second is right attitude, which includes making efforts where needed. The best impact making companies have people with right attitudes.
He concluded the session by explaining the importance of having a balanced profile growth, making more effort where needed as that’s the only way to get ahead of the herd.
